Foreign Minister Defends Social Media Ban Amid Court Challenge

Pakistan Press Foundation

On April 20, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar defended the government’s decision to block access to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that it was necessary for national security and public order. His remarks came amid increasing criticism and a court order questioning the legality of the ban.

Dar drew comparisons between Pakistan’s ban and other countries’ actions, suggesting a double standard. He pointed out that nations like the United States have restricted apps like TikTok, stating, “So, one country is OK, and Twitter banned in Pakistan is not OK?”  He added: “Surely, the country will take its own decision in the light of different reasons, which were the basis of suspending [the platform].”

The ban on X was enforced on February 17, following allegations of rigging during the February 8 general elections. According to the Interior Ministry, intelligence reports indicated that social media platforms like X could be used to incite violence and destabilize the country. The ministry emphasized that the ban was intended to maintain law and order, not to restrict freedom of expression.

However, on April 17, the Sindh High Court (SHC) challenged the government’s justification for the ban. The court ordered the Interior Ministry to withdraw its February 17 letter to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), which led to the ban on social media platform X, within one week. The SHC demanded that the government provide a valid reason for the extended ban, following over two months of disruption.
