Smart phones making us dumber

Pakistan Press Foundation

Sir: “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots” — Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one! We can blame, for the most part, technological advancements in the production of mobile phones for the exponential reduction in human interaction and, in some cases, for making us dumb. Since the 1980s, when having a mobile phone was the most supreme form of luxury that one could afford, to the present day, the technology and know-how involved in mobile phone production has become drastically cheap; now we have smart phones. This relatively low price and overuse of smart phones has rendered direct social interaction between people redundant. Nowadays, it is common for a 10-year-old to be punching buttons on a cell phone rather than playing with action figures or enjoying the outdoors.

Due to the fact that generation after generation of children has been exposed to smart phone usage, there has been a clearly evident reduction in social interaction between people and a creeping idiocy has gathered footing. One can always find a group gathering where a handful of friends are sitting at a table, busily tapping away at their smart phone screens while one lone soul looks at each one of them, hoping to strike up a conversation. It is time to wake up people, please dispose of your smart phones for a day and see what you can achieve; you will be amazed by the results! Ironically, your smart phones are making you dumb.
