Punjab gives job to police OSD after The News story

By Usman Manzoor

ISLAMABAD: Instead of reinstating the police officer, who has been removed from his post on political basis from Rawalpindi, the Punjab government says he was being given a posting.

In its official press release in response to The News story, the Punjab government did not deny any major fact of the story. The Punjab Chief Minister Secretariat clarified that Superintendent of Police Ather Waheed, who was suspended by Governor Salman Taseer for not arresting lawyers and political workers during the long march, is being posted to Police College Sihala and will no more remain an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Interestingly, the CM Secretariat and the Punjab Police did not rebut that the transfer was done on political basis and on the request of PML-N leadership of Rawalpindi. Ather Waheed contended his case, saying that if his transfer was not done on political basis, why did the two inspectors, who had investigated the two cases directly affecting the PML-N leadership in Rawalpindi, were transferred along with him. Inspector Gulistan has been transferred to Attock while Inspector Riaz has been sent to the police lines.

He said whenever an officer goes on a less than three months assignment, his post is managed on look-after basis and same is happening with the Gujrat DPO and personal staff officer to the inspector general, who are on senior management course and their posts are being managed on look after basis.

The official press release of Punjab government says: “Mr Muhammad Ather Waheed, SP, was posted as SSP Regional Investigation Branch and he assumed the charge of the said post on 15-09-2009. He proceeded for crime prevention (Senior Seminar in Japan) for the period from 06-01-2010 to 10-02-2010. He relinquished the charge on 14-01-2010.

SSP/RIB is responsible for the monitoring of all the cases being investigated in the Regional Investigation Branch. Rawalpindi, being a major division, requires a strict supervision and monitoring.

Moreover, SP/RIB is the mandatory member of the board for the first change of investigation. Keeping in view, the heavy load of the work Mr Pervaiz Iqbal, was posted in Regional Investigation Branch in his own pay and scale with the direction to Mr Muhammad Ather Waheed to report to police headquarters, Punjab, after the course. He reported his arrival to the Police Headquarters, Punjab, on 15-02-2010. He is being posted to Police College Sihala.”
