Protests against ban on newspapers

THATTA- Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh President Nisar Khuhro, strongly condemning the ban on newspapers Kainat and Janbaz. He was talking to newsmen at a ceremony of Dastarbandi of Sardar Abdul Karim Soomro in village Muhammad Khan Soomro.

Members of Press Club Thatta also condemned the ban in a meeting held in the evening. Members of press and various social and religious organisations have decided to hold a rally to protest against the government action.

In Sukkur, journalists staged a protest demonstration against the ban. The demonstration was organised by the Press Club, Sukkur and led by its President Shamim Shamsi. The participants also took out a procession from the Press Club building, which paraded on different roads and returned to the club, where a meeting was held. Addressing the meeting, Lala Asad Pathan General-Secretary, and Shabbir Bhutto, Mumtaz Bukhari, Shahid Ali, and Wajih Shamsi criticised the government move and demanded its withdrawal.

In Jacobabad, journalists and leaders of various trade unions, under the leadership of President District Union of Journalists Pervaiz Abro, observed a one-hour token hunger-strike outside the Press Club here.

Addressing the participants of the token hunger strike, Pervaiz Abro, Mukesh Ropeta, Ali Mardan Jamali, Nawaz Solangi, Yousuf Rind, Haider Thahim, Haji Ghulam Nabi Rind, Fatah Chand Karira and others strongly condemned the ban.

Earlier, the newsmen wore black arms bands and hoisted black flags at the press club building. The hunger-strike was also joined by newspaper hawkers under the leadership of their President, Abdul Hameed Khoso.
