Newspaper Editors oppose ban on newspapers

ISLAMABAD- The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has opposed the banning of two newspapers of Karachi by the Sindh Government.

Mujib-ur-Rahman Shami, President of the Council and Zahid Malik, Secretary General, CPNE, in a statement urged the Minister for Information, Nisar Memon to personally look into this step taken by the provincial government against the dailies “Janbaz and Kainat.”

The CPNE believed that this action is against the spirit of the existing good relations between the Press and the Government and also contrary to the assurance given by the President General Pervez Musharraf on many occasions that there will be complete freedom of Press in Pakistan.

The CPNE further asked the Ministry of Information and the Government of Sindh to bring such instructions to the notice of the Council so that the necessary steps are taken by the Editors’ body itself. They also urged the print media to strictly adhere the code of ethics for the Press and exercise maximum caution in coverage of news.

“The news items which harm national interests or those violate of our values should not be published in any case” they added.
