Plea to bar sub judice issues from being discussed in media

Karachi: The Sindh High Court has issued notices to the deputy attorney-general, the ministry of law, PEMRA and others on a petition seeking injunction against discussion on sub judice matters and passing comments against the judges.

Petitioner Sheikh Shahid Imam submitted that the judiciary is independent and decide matters in accordance with the law and the Constitution without any influence.

Quoting a recent incident involving a government lawyer, Dr Adbul Basit, who had challenged the constitution of a full bench and passed remarks against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry in the media, the petitioner said the media started discussion on sub judice issues and passing comments on the judges.

He said that TV anchors, politicians and other people could not discuss sub judice matters and pass comments on the judges of superior courts, and prayed to the court to pass an injunction against such discussions on sub judice issues.
