PFUJ, APNEC flay cabinet’s decision

KARACHI- The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation (APNEC) have expressed concern over the federal cabinet’s decision of allowing newspaper groups to launch private television channels.

In a joint statement on July 16th, 2003, APNEC chairman Abdul Hameed Chhapra and PFUJ president Ahfazur Rahman argued that the opening of TV channels by newspapers would result in the concentration of media power in a few hands.

The statement said it was necessary for the government to encourage new investment in the electronic media by people who were desirous of introducing new ideas for the growth of society on sound and democratic lines.
