OIC should establish news channel: Rashid

ISLAMABAD- Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on July 18th, 2003 highlighted the need for having an independent news channel under the umbrella of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

The setting up of OIC news channel will help improve the image of the Muslim Ummah and safeguard their religious, cultural and political values and interests, he said while talking to a two-member official media delegation from Qatar.

The delegation comprised Director and Chief Editor Qatar News Agency (QNA) Ahmed Jassem Al-Hamar and in charge English News QNA Mubarak Khalifa Al-Mannai. Secretary Information and Broadcasting Syed Anwar Mahmood was also present.

Rashid urged the Arab world to divert a part of their financial resources towards promotion of information and media thus improving their image besides effectively countering the baseless and unfounded propaganda against them through different media organs.

He welcomed the agreement reached between the Associated Press of Pakistan and QNA for exchange of news and photo service, expressing the hope this will help improve existing ties between both the countries, especially in the field of information and media.

Referring to the state of media in Pakistan, Rashid said the media organs in the country enjoy full liberty, and especially during the last three-four years this sector has been given maximum freedom.

On the idea for launching an independent news channel under the auspices of the OIC, he said this has become the need of the hour, as the Muslim Ummah has no media organ to effectively counter the baseless propaganda against it.
