Pemra bar for print media persons done away with: Rashid

KARACHI- Federal Minister for Information and Media Development Shaikh Rashid Ahmed on February 19, 2003 said the president had done away with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) condition that those with print media could not go for a TV channel.

“We also want to initiate a couple of more channels,” the minister said, while speaking at Meet the Press Programme at the Karachi Press Club. He declared that other print media would be welcomed to come up with TV channels.

The information minister said the PTV World will be converted into a 24-hours news channel. He expressed his desire that the PTV News should be a 24-hour transmission by excluding the entertainment section from it.

Shaikh Rashid said that the prime minister had approved this idea on February 18, 2003. He pointed out that PTV One has become a 24-hour entertainment channel.

The information minister added that permission had been granted for the setting up 28 radio channels and that these radio transmissions should come on air by March 23. He declared that more radio stations would also be welcomed and that he was ready to lower the licence fees in this regard.
