Newsman shot dead

KARACHI- Unidentified terrorists shot dead a trainee newsman working for a local Urdu daily in Korangi area on Thursday, police said.

According to details, Sagheer Hussain Kazmi, a local journalist, on February 20, 2003 went to the house of his friend Khurshid in Korangi Sector 35-C area. After ringing the doorbell, he sat under a tree opposite his friend’s residence where he was waiting for Khurshid.

Police quoting witnesses said three armed men riding a motorcycle came near Sagheer and opened indiscriminate fire and fled away. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in critical condition where doctors declared him dead. Hospital sources informed that deceased suffered three bullet wounds in his neck, knee and leg.

A case was registered with Korangi police station through FIR No 73/2003 against unknown assailants on the complaint of deceased’s father Kabir Hussain Kazmi.

Police sources said it was apparently an act of sectarian killing, as the deceased had no enmity with anyone. However, Town Police Officer (TPO), Korangi, Javed Baloch told sources that investigations were underway and soon police would trace and nab the killers.

Regarding motive behind the killing, he said: “At this stage it is premature to comment whether it is a sectarian killing or of personal enmity.” Quoting statement of father of the deceased, TPO Korangi said Sagheer was not affiliated with any political or religious party and even he was not an active member of any Shiite NGO.

Sagheer Hussain, aged 35, was working in a local daily ‘Mashriq’ as trainee sub-editor. He had joined the newspaper some four months ago. Sources said he had returned the country from Europe some two years back. He was married and father of two kids. Police sources said one of the deceased’s brothers was a serving army official and presently posted at Attock.
