Pakistan Television (PTV) witnesses declining trend during last three years

LAHORE- Pakistan television market has witnessed a declining trend in the recent past and during the last three years sales of TV sets have dropped from 600,000 to 400,000 annually. However at present, market has become stagnant.

Ashraf Sajid, Marketing Manager, Samsung Electronics, Gulf, said that though in the wake of various measures adopted by the government to curb smuggling, import of TV sets has slightly increased, the business in the local market has not picked up.

The steps taken by the Pakistan government to check smuggling have increased the government revenue, but imported TV sets, which are costly than the smuggled ones, are still beyond the reach of a sizeable number of customers, he said. He added that main reason for decline in the sale of TV sets in the country is increase in the prices of TV sets and low purchasing power of customers.

He was of the view that recent concessions announced by the government regarding the import of audio-visual electronic home appliances such as DVDs etc. would have a healthy impact on this sector.

Responding to a question, Ashraf Sajid said that Samsung is latecomer in the Pakistani market as compared to its competitors and added that the market share of Samsung in Pakistan TV market is around 10 percent, which may increase to 15 percent by end of the year.

He said that Samsung has appointed Pak Electronics (PEL) as its sole distributor in Pakistan, adding the network of around 3,000 PEL dealers would be used for the sale of entire range of Samsung products.

He said that Samsung has its own assembling plant, which is situated near Rawalpindi with the assembling capacity of around 48,000 TV every year.

“We will definitely extend our assembling facilities in Pakistan after getting more market share. We are considering to use the infrastructure of PEL,” he added.

He also disclosed that Samsung plans to start assembling of refrigerators and air conditioners in Pakistan from next year.
