Pakistan Press Foundation

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression is concerned over a new law restricting freedom of speech and freedom of the press, enacted by the Hungarian Parliament on 5 November.

Quoting the information from Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in a letter to the Prime Minister of Hungary said, Quote “this law punishes by up to three years in prison for making and distribution of a false video or voice recording, even if the recording is not seen or heard. If a recording is shown widely, then maker and distributor of the recording will get upto three-year imprisonment. The provisions of the Criminal Code (CC) were also amended for the purposes of the protection of human dignity including statements that violate the dignity of Hungarian nation or of any national, ethnic, racial or religious community and the preclusion of falsifying evidence. With the advent of social media, mock or modified video and voice recordings, re-mixed or voice-over satiric clips have become popular and essential part of political expression. These forms of representation are now criminalized in Hungary”.
