Pakistan achieves 80 pc Internet coverage in 10 months
ISLAMABAD- No country has achieved 80 per cent internet coverage in 10 months like Pakistan.
This was said by the Federal Minister of Science and Technology Dr Attaur Rehman while speaking at the launching ceremony of WWW.PAKWATAN.COM.
One thousands IT kiosks with the help of PSO at petrol pumps he said would be established throughout Pakistan. Airports and Post Offices, he said, would also have IT kiosks so that a person without a computer could have access to the Internet.
By March the Minster said Internet connectivity would improve. The new submarine cable he said would be operative by March and this would help speed up the Internet.
The price of bandwidth he said was going down in Pakistan and it was the cheapest in the developing world.
Pakistan cannot cross barriers of debt unless it achieves the goal of Information Technology revolution in the country through quality education, particularly in the Field of Science and Technology.
Dr Atta-ur-Rehman lauded the efforts of Shaukat M. Sindhu, Chairman PAANA and his team for launching a complete website on Pakistan, saying, it will provide important information about Pakistan to the people at home and abroad.
He said, Pakistan was facing challenges in different socio-economic sectors in this fast changing world and for this purpose such a thing like a website was very much needed.
Pakistan he said needs to produce 100,000 IT graduates to cam three billion dollars each year. Thirty-one new IT departments he said have been created in the country, and seven new IT universities are being created. The fee of the virtual university he said would be kept very low so that it would come within the reach of the common man.
Earlier, Shaukat M. Sindhu, Chairman PAANA giving the details of “Pakwatan.com” said, the Web Portal www.Pakwatan.com is a joint venture of Pakistani American Association of North America (PAANA) and E Marketing USA, Inc.
The Web Portal is Yahoo of Pakistan in making providing any or all information on Pakistan, he said, it will be an IT breakthrough that Pakistan needs to succeed in the 21st century. It will enhance our image internationally.
President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar said on the occasion that the use of information technology for promotion of national cause is highly commendable.
