Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: Lawyers across Pakistan observed November 3 as a black day against the imposition of emergency, promulgation of PCO and sacking of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry by former president Pervez Musharraf in 2007. Media persons also carried out protests against the November 03, 2007 action of Pervez Musharraf outside the Karachi Press Club.

The legal fraternity ran an unprecedented campaign for the restoration of judiciary and the movement ended in Musharraf’s ouster. He first quit office as the Chief Executive and later tendered resignation as President of Pakistan on August 18, 2008.

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) have been observing Nov 3 as a black day every year since 2007.

Describing the emergency rule as an attack on the judicial freedom, the lawyers community on Nov 3 expresses resolve to safeguard and uphold the Constitution against any unconstitutional acts of dictators. The lawyers have demanded of the government to initiate proceedings of high treason against Musharraf. A protest was held by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists at the Karachi Press Club on Sunday against November 3rd emergency. —Sana/Online
