Newspaper workers wage board meeting held

ISLAMABAD- The 16th, meeting of the Seventh Wage Board for Newspaper Employees was held. The Board Chairman, Justice (Rtd) Raja Afrasiab Khan, presided over the meeting.

Syed Fasih Iqbal and Arshad Zuberi represented the employers at the meeting.

The employees were represented by the All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (APNEC) chairman, Abdul Hameed Chhapra, secretary-general Pervez Shaukat, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) president, I.H Raashed and senior assistant secretary general Abdullah Jan.

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) director, Dr. A.R Kamal, also attended the meeting at the special invitation of the Board chairman.

Justice Khan requested Dr. Kamal to submit his recommendations regarding the increase in the newspaper employees wages, scales and other fringe benefits while taking into consideration the economic factors between July 1995 to June 2000.

The employees representatives expressed their confidence in Dr. Kamal and said that they would accept and endorse his recommendations.

The employers representatives, however, said they would consider the expertÂ’s recommendations. They asked Dr. Kamal to keep in view the memorandum of demands submitted by the employees as well as the written response of the employers to that memorandum, while preparing his recommendations.

The employers representatives informed the judge that they would express their views on Dr. Kamal’s recommendations after he submits the report.

Justice Khan asked Dr. Kamal to submit his recommendations by September 24 so that the Wage Award could be announced according to the schedule, by October 8.
