ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has announced that Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) would launch two new channels – PTV Sports and PTV Children – while current PTV Sports channel would be renamed as PTV Cricket.

“PTV Sports Channel will cover all sports except cricket while already running PTV Sports would stick to cricket news and live coverage only,” he told the media after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) parliamentary party meeting. He said a separate PTV channel dedicating to the children of under-16 years of age would also be launched.

Chaudhry said Dr Arif Alvi would be PTI’s candidate for the slot of president. He expressed hope Alvi would easily secure the number of votes required to win the election. “We have a clear majority and PTI will win the presidential election,” he claimed. He said all allied parties, including Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) would support the PTI’s nominee in the presidential election.

The information minister said a parliamentary board headed by Prime Minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan has been constituted, which would decide the allocation of party’s tickets to candidates for the upcoming by-elections.

“Parliamentary board will meet on August 27. No new applications will be received, and tickets will be awarded to those candidates who had already applied for concerned constituencies in general elections or those whom the parliamentary board itself will recommend, he said.

Chaudhry said that PTI’s federal government has lifted political censorship on the state television channel and now it covers all political parties, including those sitting on the opposition benches.

On Friday last, the minister had announced he was nominating members of two main opposition parties ? Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar of the PPP and Ahmad Khan of the PML-N ? as members of the PTV’s editorial board.
