Media bashing vs bashing media

Sir: We are living in real exciting times, not really knowing the end in mind while creating history, rather living history. Media has mostly got bashing and negative views from across the society, parents, families, town committees, women, trade unions, institutions, artistes, etc.

The list is endless. Legal cases are often filed against media persons and media organisations for allegedly giving wrong or twisted coverage and news. Media not only refutes such allegations, but also claims that it is merely showing a mirror to society and showing or writing what the audience wants to see. More so, the constitution of Pakistan grants rights of freedom of expression to all citizens including print/electronic media. The point of media is to report inadequacies, deficiencies, injustices, shortages, ills and evils that prevail in society. With competition increasing in the world and advances in technology, media will become more proactive, open and loud and thus get more bashing. Should this continue? Governments and the media users like the common man are rightly concerned. Media should not become a mad bull (chasing money and advertisements) that its horns start cracking the very edifice around which society is built. Unethical media practices by media persons and organisations keep surfacing in Pakistan as well as abroad. The issue is dicey to say the least. Bashing media must be strategically reoriented and brought in sync with the overall Pakistani social spectrum through responsible and just ‘media bashing’. Institutions, organisations and, in fact, all media users, therefore, need to pull themselves up in order to bring order back in the media.
