Journalists walk out of NA, Senate over TV reporter’s killing

ISLAMABAD: Journalists on Wednesday staged a walk out from upper and lower houses against the murder of journalist Mukarram Khan Atif of a private TV channel at Shabqadar.

After the walk out, Federal Ministers of Law Maula Bakhsh Chandio, Senator Zahid Khan and MNA Aftab Sheikh had a long chat with the journalists and assured to take practical measures to arrest the perpetrators.

The minister said investigations into the gruesome incident would be conducted. The journalists apprised the minister about their problems in Fata, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and in other parts of the country while performing professional duties.

Later the house offered Fateha for the departed soul of the journalist on the request of Sheikh Aftab. The prayer was led by Hamid Saeed Kazmi. Meanwhile, meeting of the Special Committee to investigate the issue of threatening messages being received by the journalists and media personnel was held on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Parvez Khan, MNA and attended by Dr Attiya Inayatullah, Engineer Khurram Dustagir Khan, Nawab Muhammad Yousaf Talpur and Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi, MNAs, said a press release.

The Committee asked the representative of journalists to request the media personnel being threatened, to come forward and provide some sort of proof directly or through their concerned union and elected bodies to committee to proceed in the matter.

It was decided to approach all the provincial and national journalist bodies/organizations to furnish the details of threat received to any of their member during last two years on which they have taken actions. The committee members condemned the murder of journalists/media personnel and expressed sympathies with the grieved families.
