ISLAMABAD: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors on Wednesday condemned and expressed grief and sorrow over the killing of Mukarram Khan Atif, the journalist from Charsadda.

Jamil Athar Qazi, President of the CPNE, Qazi Asad Abid, Senior Vice President, Ilyas Shakir, Secretary General, Javed Meher Shamsi, Joint Secretary and Mushtaq Ahmed Qureshi, the Finance Secretary of the CPNE, condemned the murder of the senior television journalist from Dunya TV, Mukarram Khan Atif, who also worked for the Pashto service of a foreign radio channel.

The office bearers of the CPNE termed the murder of the journalist as an open attack on the free media. They said that there had been many such condemnable incidents in the tribal areas wherein journalists were brutally murdered but the authorities have not yet taken a single step to stop the recurrence of such tragic incidents.

They said that performing professional journalistic duties in the tribal areas was becoming more difficult with every day for the journalists there, and they were sacrificing their lives for it.

The CPNE urged the government to ensure the safety of journalists, especially those working in the tribal areas.

The CPNE office bearers requested the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to take notice of the killing, making sure that the matter is investigated without any delay and the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The CPNE office bearers conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family of the murdered journalist, and prayed for Atif’s departed soul.
