Journalists protest against ban on TV channels

KARACHI (November 18 2007): Dozens of journalists surrounded by heavy contingents of police and Pakistan Rangers held a peaceful demonstration on Saturday protesting the government’s fresh curbs on media and ban on two local television channels in Dubai.

The procession was led and organized by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ). A large number of journalists, who were scheduled to rally from Karachi Press Club (KPC) through Jang Press, had to restrict their movement to outside the KPC as the police had blocked all the ways to their destination (Jang Press).

Vans of Pakistan Rangers and police were parked on different corners and roads around the KPC to prevent the media persons from reaching the Jang Press where they had to hold the major demonstration.

The journalists with placards in their hands chanted slogans against Islamabad for introducing new restrictions of media under PCO, 2007 and also slammed the Dubai government for banning transmission of the Geo TV and ARY. The protesters vowed to keep their struggle continued for media freedom in the country.
