Media role stressed for curbing human trafficking
PESHAWAR, Nov 18: Speakers at a seminar regretted that despite constitutional protection human trafficking was menacing the society.
The seminar was organised by the Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (Camp) in collaboration with the European Union for capacity building of selected journalists of the NWFP and tribal agencies.
Former attorney-general Qazi Mohammad Jamil, Advocate Barkatullah Khan, Camp senior development consultant Asghar Ali Khan, Camp chief executive Naveed Ahmed Shinwari were resource persons at the programme.
Mr Jamil said that the Constitution supported fundamental rights of people irrespective of colour, creed, religion and area and anybody could move courts for protection of the same.
He said women and children were more vulnerable to human trafficking and asked media personnel, NGOs and other responsible segments of society to play their role for curbing this menace.
The former attorney-general said it was the responsibility of any government to provide basic necessities of life to people.
Law enforcement agencies, he said, were legally bound to inform a person before taking him or her into custody about the crime he or she had committed and no one could be kept in habeas corpus. He said bonded labour, keeping people in private jails, forced marriages, selling of daughters were different kinds of human trafficking and needed to be checked.
