In Islamabad, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, emphasized the necessity of global initiatives to combat the spread of fake news and the misuse of social media. This statement was made during a discussion with a visiting delegation of Bangladeshi journalists on May 10.

“The Government of Pakistan recognizes the importance of freedom of the press and freedom of expression, and it is determined to protect the rights of journalists”, Tarar said.

The visiting journalists, including figures such as Iqtadar Ahmed, Mukrram Hussain, Riaz Ahmed, and others, acknowledged the importance of such visits for enhancing relations and promoting people-to-people contact between Bangladesh and Pakistan. They expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and support provided by the Government of Pakistan and its journalism institutions.

Recently, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication announced the establishment of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on April 24, replacing the Federal Investigation Agency’s Cybercrime Wing.  According to an Interior Ministry official, the NCCIA will be empowered through legislation giving it powers to police cyberspace.

Furthermore, on May 9, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved an amendment to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, which included the creation of a Digital Rights Protection Authority. The Authority will have the power to investigate violations of the new PECA law on social media and take appropriate action.
