Govt terms journalists’ killing in Wana act of terrorism

WANA,February 09,2005: The government on Tuesday said an attack, which killed two journalists and injured an AFP stringer in a tribal area, was an act of terrorism.

Unidentified gunmen struck late on Monday after a ceremony where the government granted amnesty to a militant leader in return for his pledge to live peacefully in South Waziristan.

Amir Nawab, a reporter for an English language daily and Allah Noor Wazir, who was working for a TV channel, died instantly in the hail of assault rifle fire. AFP stringer Anwar Shakir was in hospital with a bullet injury in the back.

“The attack on journalists is an act of terrorism aimed at sabotaging the peace process in South Waziristan,” Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said in a statement.

Officials said five journalists were returning to Wana from Sara Rugha, 40 kilometres to the north-east, when two gunmen sprayed their van with bullets. Two others, BBC stringer Dilawar Khan Wazir and Malik Hassan from a regional daily, escaped unhurt.

Al-Jazeera journalist Zardad Khan, who was earlier thought to be in the car, left the vehicle before the attack, media sources said. Nawab, 34, had worked as stringer for Associated Press Television News, family sources said. Fellow victim Allah Noor Wazir was in his mid-30s.

Sherpao said the government had directed law-enforcement agencies to bring the culprits in the latest attack to justice.
