Protests held against killing of journalists in Wana

PESHAWAR, February 09 2005: The journalist community of Peshawar and adjoining tribal area staged a protest demonstration to condemn the gruesome killing of two journalists in Wana, headquarters of the troubled South Waziristan Agency.

The demonstration in which journalists, labourers, politicians and activists of the civil societies took part, started from Peshawar Press Club and marched on the main Sher Shah Soori Road towards the Governor House. They were chanting slogans and carrying placards inscribed with the slogans in favour of the deceased journalists.

Addressing the protesting journalists, speakers demanded of the government to arrest the culprits and provide protection to the newsmen working in the areas of the conflict. They also demanded compensation for the families of the deceased journalists.

Those who addressed the journalists included President KhUJ Sajjad Haider, General Secretary Peshawar Press Club Saiful Islam Saifi, labour leader Abdur Rab Sabir, political leaders Rehmat Salam Khattak, Haji Abdul Jalil Jan, Habibullah Zahid and Mohammad Tariq of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

Two journalists Allah Noor Wazir of a local Pushto channel, AVT Khyber and Amir Nawab of the APTN have been killed, while their companion Anwar Shakir, a stringer of AFP, sustained serious injuries when some unknown armed men opened fire on them at Kari Kot area of Wana.

They were returning after attending a tribal jirga in which commander Baitullah Mehsood, an associate of Abdullah Mehsood, surrendered before the government. He promised to remain peaceful.
