Gang-rape victim accuses police of protecting culprits

HYDERABAD, June 21 2006: A 17-year-old girl of Tando Adam in the Sanghar district was gang-raped on June 6, but the culprits are still at large and the police are not supporting her and her family due to the political influence of the culprits. Naila, daughter of Liaquat Ali Rajput, resident of Ahmedpur locality of Tando Adam, told newsmen here that six persons gang-raped her at an unknown place after kidnapping her in a car. “I left for Qur’aan Khawani at a relative’s residence in the locality. Suddenly, a man standing by a blue-colour car pushed me in the car and made me unconscious,” she said, adding that the kidnapping took place around 3:30 pm.

She said she found herself at an unknown place and six persons were standing beside her and all were drunk and introduced them as Nasir, Khan Chand, Sanaullah, Israr, Ismael and Ayub Khoso and all of them raped her. After the gang-rape, Naila said, they dropped her at around 10 pm near village Allahyar. When she reached her home and informed them about her ordeal. Her father and her brother took her to the Tando Adam police station for registration of the case against the culprits. However, the duty officer refused to lodge the case and on the next day her father took her again to the police station and met the station house officer. The SHO agreed that the case would be registered but after listening the names of the culprits he took the plea that the case would now be registered after investigation.

She said the SHO asked them to come again on the next day but then he refused to give a letter for her medical examination. “And on June 8, the SHO said if you want to lodge a case against all the nominated persons then the case would not be registered,” she added. However, the police on their own registered a case on June 9 around 1 am against Khan Chand, Ismail and Israr and omitted names of the other accused despite her requests.

The rape victim said that police took her for medical examination on June 10 at the Tando Adam Taluka Hospital. “The delay was made to support the culprits on the pressure of political and influential persons. She appealed to the president, prime minister, the Supreme Court, the human rights organisations and other people concerned to help her get justice. “No arrest has been made even after the passage of two weeks and even a correct FIR has not been registered.”

She said that stern action should be taken against the culprits and the local administration and police should also be taken to task. Naila added that police from some other district should investigate the case for transparency and immediate justice should be provided to her. Her father Liaquat Rajput, crying on the occasion, said her daughter was raped, because they are poor as he is working on daily wages and his sons are jobless. He said feudals of the area, including some political leaders and other influentials were supporting the culprits. He said her daughter got education up to 8th grade and demanded for justice. He said that an application has also been sent to the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
