ECP seeks reply from NADRA over voters’ lists

By Hasnaat Malik

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday sought a reply from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) about the finalisation of verified voters lists of constituencies where by-elections are being held on February 20.

NADRA sources told Daily Times that a meeting of ECP members was held on Thursday to discuss the by-elections, which were stayed by the Supreme Court.

They said that ECP members had sought a reply from NADRA today (Friday) about when it would be able to provide verified voters lists of the constituencies where by-elections would be held on February 20.

Sources said that the ECP would decide the matter after examining the NADRA report, which would be presented before the ECP members today.

Sources also said that the ECP wanted by-elections to be held before Senate elections, but if NADRA was unable to provide the final voters lists soon, the schedule of Senate elections could also be delayed for a week.

Daily Times learnt that the ECP was trying to avoid confrontation with the Supreme Court; and was therefore still indecisive about holding by-elections on five vacant seats of the National Assembly and two seats of provincial assemblies.
