NA body for ban on anti-Pakistan words on TV channels

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting on Thursday recommended that no one would be allowed to speak against Pakistan in programmes broadcast by private television channels.

It observed that words like “Pakistan will break” must not go on-air and use of such language should be banned. The committee meeting held at the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) headquarters was chaired by Begum Hasnain.

Members, National Assembly Samina Mushtaq Pugganwala, Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, Rana Nazir Ahmed Khan, Malik Muhammad Shakeel Awan, Bushra Rehman, Mehren Anwar Raja, Chudhry Saeed Iqbal, Mahboob Ullah Jan, Pemra Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan attended the meeting.

Firdous informed the committee that the government is making all-out efforts in providing conducive working environment to media. She said the Press Council of Pakistan has been activated to solve the issues of electronic and print media.

The minister said that an effective monitoring system is in place to keep an eye on the contents being aired by private television channels. She also directed the PEMRA to take action against those cable operators who are showing Indian channels and in this regard department should present its report with in thirty days.

Pemra Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar said Pemra has so far received 1076 complaints after establishment of its complaint cell, adding that 90 per cent complaints were regarding the contents of private television channels programmes. ñAPP

Talking to media, Firdous urged Punjab government to expose elements involved in killing of innocent people by providing spurious drugs. She called upon Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif and the PML-N leadership to take stern action against those involved in death of around hundred heart patients.
