Concern voiced over HR violations

PESHAWAR – The Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid (Sharp) has alleged that the MMA government has failed to provide security to the people, especially women in the NWFP.

In a press statement issued in Peshawar on September 1, the society said the number of cases involving violation of human rights had reached an alarming level, but the government had taken no steps to stop the violence of rights especially those of women and children.

It said 93 people had committed suicide in the area, while honour killing had claimed the lives of 12 persons, which showed the prevailing state of affairs.

A total of 150 cases of kidnapping had been reported, while 734 murders were also recorded, the press release said and added that about 1,052 people lost their lives over minor issues. The society demanded that the NWFP government should set up special committees to ensure security of life, honour and property to masses.
