Case against newsmen withdrawn

SANGHAR- The Sinjhoro police on Friday withdrew the case registered against journalists and editors of six Sindhi dailies on Friday.

Dr Sharif Baloch, one of the complainants in the case, went to the police station with his brother, Shafique Leghari, and recorded his statement. In his statement he said there was a misunderstanding and he did not intend to register the case against the journalists. He also visited the Sinjhoro Press Club and apologized to the newsmen.

However, a case against the two women, Kheer Bai and Izzat Bai, was not withdrawn and they are still languishing in a Karachi jail.

The two women have accused Shafique Leghari of raping one of them.

According to the women, Leghari, who was the chairman of the local Zakat committee, called them to his house on the pretext of giving them Zakat cheque. When they arrived there, the family of the chairman was not present in the house where Leghari raped one of the women, it was alleged.

The women informed journalists about the rape to seek justice and also held a press conference at the Sinjhoro Press Club on June 30.

After publication of news, Leghari and his brother, lodged an First Information Report (FIR) against the editors and journalists of six Sindhi dailies and also against the women.
