Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors-All Pakistan Newspapers Society meeting convened to address indecency in press

ISLAMABAD- An inter-ministerial meeting participated by the Federal Ministers for Information and Religious Affairs decided to convene a meeting of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) and All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) to address the growing concern on the issue of vulgarity and indecency being practised by a section of the evening press.

It was also decided that the two newspaper’s organisations would be requested to develop a set of guidelines for their member publications that would ensure adherence to the values of the Pakistani society and avoidance of printing words and pictures that are in conflict with those values.

The meeting also decided to work closely with the national media to ensure that it does not reflect anything in conflict with the social, cultural and moral values of the Pakistani society.

The two ministers agreed that steps needed to be taken to facilitate both the electronic and the print media to adhere to the social and moral values and ensure that the sensitivities of the society are always kept in view.

On a proposal by the Minister for Religious Affairs Dr Mahmood Ahmed Ghazi, Information Minister Nisar Memon directed Pakistan Television (PTV) and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) to produce and air programmes relating to Manasik-e-Haj as part of their on-going religious programme presentations.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the Secretaries of the Ministry of Information and Religious Affairs besides the senior officials of PTV and PBC.
