Attack on media

The HRCP the other day condemned the attack on cable operators, the blocking of the telecasts of a number of new channels and the burning of newspapers after snatching them from vendors. These attacks are highly condemnable because they hinder the freedom of expression not only of the media but also of ordinary citizens.

The HRCP has also demanded that the government must arrest the assailants and take necessary action against them. Since the inception of private news channels in Pakistan, media outlets have been facing a series of bans and attacks on their offices. Apparently the media is free, but when it plays its role in criticising the wrongdoings of politicians or other groups, it always comes under attack. The media is regarded as an important pillar of our society and its role is vital to the survival of the democratic environment that the country is trying to sustain since its independence.
