ADB to finance mega city project

KARACHI: City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that the mega projects to facilitate citizens will be incorporated in Asian Development Bankís Mega City Development Project, as the same could not be initiated owing to the shortage of funds.

He said the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and Works Services Department of City District Government Karachi (CDGK) would submit their projects PC-1, today (Monday) as the work on the first phase of the $200 million project will be started before May or June.

He expressed these views in a meeting with Urban Economist of the ADB, Shane Rosenthal. The meeting was also attended by the District Coordination Officer (DCO), Fazlur Rehman, Coordinator Karachi Mega City Development Projects, Roshan Ali Shaikh, consultant team leader Jim Arthur.

ìThe projects include laying of water and sewerage infrastructure besides a water treatment plant as well as garbage transfer stationsî, Kamal said.

The city Nazim added that the CDGK has also planned to construct expressway on Malir Nadi like Lyari Nadi to provide more corridors and travelling facilities to the citizen while the construction of Elevated Expressway will started within the current month.

The city Nazim further mentioned that the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) plan has been finalised. ìA Japanese company will invest $800 million on the project and the project will be completed within two-and-half year rather then its stipulated time of eight years, he added.

The ADBís Urban Consultant, Shane Rosenthal told the city Nazim that the first instalment of the ADBís fund for Karachi Mega City Development Project will be released soon.
