25,000 teachers to be trained in IT by year end: Atta

ISLAMABAD- As many as 25,000 science school teachers would be trained in IT by the end of the current year, said Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Attaur Rehman. He was speaking at the two-day International Conference on the “Use of New Information Technologies in the teaching of Science.”

The conference was jointly organized by Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Isesco), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT).

The minister said the programme has already started and 12,500 teachers of biology, physics, chemistry and other subjects other than IT are presently undergoing training.

Atta said 11 universities are being set up to impart quality education and professionals from abroad are being persuaded to come and teach in these universities. This would help improve the quality of education.

“We have also started a programme for strengthening the area of research in the engineering sciences, mathematics,” he said and the government was providing grant for PhD students which are about $8,000 per student per year.

He said emphasis is being laid on research in four main disciplines of basic sciences including physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics while in the applied sciences IT, bio- technology, engineering sciences and pharmaceutical are being focussed.

Atta said the projects underway in research centres of universities are essentially around this basic strategy.-APP
