Print media urged to wield pen for enhancing country’s image

LAHORE- Federal Minister for Information and Media Development Nisar Memon has called upon the print media community to wield pen for enhancing the image and prestige of the country.

Talking to the editorial staff of Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) during his surprise visit the minister said the media should also highlight achievements made during the last two and a halt years as the government made progress in several areas of life and improved efficiency of many departments. He said it required a comparative appreciation in reference to previous governments.

About the city of Lahore, he said it is the hub of political activities of the country as many a political movement raised its head from here and it is also a centre of Intellectuals as manifested by a number of newspapers published and other art activities from the great city. He urged APP staffers to orient its reporting keeping in view its newsworthiness of the town.

Discussing surreptitious anti-Pakistan propaganda, he said newsmen should be able to differentiate between healthy news and anti-Pakistan propaganda. He said newsmen should not become a tool in the hands of such forces and should be able to perceive what is good for their motherland. He disclosed that President Musharraf is meeting editors of National Dailies on Saturday to discuss this aspect in particular.

Incidentally, Nisar Memon is the first Federal Minister for Information who visited APP office here. He was surprised to learn that no Federal Minister of Information ever visited offices of APP here to acquire first hand information about such an import institution.

In his 45-minute interaction with APP newsmen, the minister obtained first-hand account of the working procedures. He visited all sections and directly interviewed personnel working in the system, which flashes news nation-wide. He greeted APP staffers for being the first to reap fruits of the Seventh Wage Board Award.
