10 more dead as city sees no let-up in target killings

Karachi: Violence continued to rage in the city on Wednesday as 10 people were gunned down, including activists of the Pakistan People’s Party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Bengali Action Committee.

Two PPP activists, Mohammad Raza and Jehangir, were gunned down near the Nishan-e-Haider Chowk, Pakistan Bazaar.

SHO Ghulam Nabi Afridi said the two men, who were close friends, were sitting at a roadside café in the morning when four men riding two motorcycles arrived there and opened fire on them.

They were first taken to the Qatar Hospital and later to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they breathed their last. Each man suffered two bullet wounds to his upper torso. The police found 9mm and 30-bore pistol bullet shells at the crime scene. The police officer said Raza was a resident of Aziz Nagar, while Jehangir lived in Ittehad Town.

Enraged over the dual murder, PPP activists staged a protest demonstration in Pakistan Bazaar, demanding the arrest of the killers.

MQM activist killed

The body of an MQM activist was found lying in bushes in Gulshan-e-Zia in the morning.

Manghopir Sub-Divisional Police Officer Najamul Hassan said the body of Sohail Karim, a resident of Ali Farooqi Society, Orangi Town, was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The postmortem revealed that Karim was tortured and then shot many times.

The police officer said Karim had left home on Tuesday night and was missing since then.

BAC man murdered

A Bengali Action Committee activist was gunned down in Surjani Town. SHO Irshad Gabol said Abdul Hanaan, a resident of Taisar Town, was present outside his home in the afternoon when two men riding a motorcycle shot him. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he expired.

Hanaan was shot four times. The police found 9mm pistol bullet casings at the murder scene. Quoting Hanaan’s family, a police investigator told The News that the victim had no enemies.

Two killed in Memon Goth

Two men, suspected to be Lyari-based gangsters, were shot dead in Samoo Goth, Memon Goth.

SHO Rao Mohammed Khalid said Asif and Fahim were sitting at a tea stall at night when two men riding a motorcycle sprayed them with bullets.

They expired while being taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The two victims suffered multiple bullet wounds. “Asif and Fahim were members of a Lyari-based gang,” the police officer said. The two men were wanted by the Malir City police in many cases.

Herbal practitioner slain

A practitioner of herbal medicine was murdered outside Ayesha Unani Dawakhana in Raja Tanveer Colony, Iqbal Market.

SHO Sabir Khan said 50-year-old Hakeem Mohammad Irshad had stepped out of his clinic at night following a power outage when two men on a motorcycle shot him.

Irshad was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was shot four times. Police found 9mm pistol bullet shells at the crime scene.

A police investigator said the herbal practitioner’s murder appeared to be a target killing case. Irshad was a resident of the same area where he was murdered.

Trader targeted

An electronics trader was shot dead and his two brothers injured near KDA Chowrangi, North Nazimabad.

SP Khurram Waris said 50-year-old Sajjad Hussain Rizvi and his brothers, one of whom was an MQM activist, were heading home in their Cultus car at night after closing their shop at the Electronics Market in Saddar when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on them.

They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Sajjad expired while his brothers survived their injuries.

The SP said the three brothers were residents of Block-C, North Nazimabad.

The victim was shot once in the head. “It’s premature to establish the motive, but we are probing different possibilities. The attack may be sectarian in nature or the victim could have been receiving threats from extortionists,” the police official said.

Scrap dealer slain

A scrap dealer was shot dead near Ghani Chowrangi, SITE. SHO Abdul Moeed said Shahbaan Ali, who ran his business at the Shershah scrap market, was heading towards his home near Tariq Road in the evening when a man came close to his car when it slowed down at a speed breaker and shot him.

The victim was shot once in the head. “The police tried searching for the bullet shells at the crime scene but couldn’t find any,” the SHO said.

A police sleuth said the possibility of the victim receiving extortion threats would be investigated.

Murder in Pakistan Bazaar

A man was shot dead near al Habib Masjid, Sector 15B of Pakistan Bazaar at night. The area’s SHO said Aqib was attacked by two men on a motorcycle near his home. He was shot four times. “Aqib had a criminal record,” the police officer added.
