Winners Announced for PPF Gender in Journalism Awards 2006

The winners of “PPF Gender in Journalism Awards 2006”, organised by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), and supported by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) were announced in Karachi on October 10, 2006. Fatima Suriya Bajiya, Adviser to Chief Minister of Sindh, distributed the awards.

The PPF Gender in Journalism Awards are awarded for the following two categories:

Most Gender Sensitive Reporting by male or female journalist:
This award recognizes excellence in coverage of gender related issues. The Award carries a reward of Rs. 50,000. The winner in this category was the article “Tan pe kantone ka jangal aabaad hai” by Razia Farid published in Jang, Mid Week.

Best Reporting by Female Journalist:
This award recognizes the competence of women journalists, who may be role models for other women in the profession of journalism. The Award carries a reward of Rs. 50,000. The winner in this category was the article “Why must we care” by Afshan Subohi published in Daily Dawn.

Finalists for the Gender in Journalism Awards 2006

The following five candidates were selected by the Panel of Judges as “Finalists in the Category of Gender Sensitive Reporting”:

Ms. Razia Farid for her articles “Tan pe kantone ka jangal aabaad hai” published in the Jang, Mid Week
Mr. Tahir Siddiqui for his article “Foreign prisoners trapped in jail” published in Dawn Review.
Mr. Masood Ansari for his article “Wrongs and Rights” published in Monthly Newsline.
Ms. Razia Farid for her article “Ye hai suraj isse chaa jane do” published in Daily Jang. Karachi.
Ms. Narjis Malik for her article “Arzoo sahil ki mujh toofan ke marey ko hai” published in Jang, Sunday Magazine.

The following five candidates were selected by the judges as “Finalists in the Category of Best Reporting by Female Journalist”:

Ms. Afshan Subohi for her articles “Why must we care” published in Daily Dawn.
Ms. Sabina Qazi for her article “Beggars can be chooser” published in Monthly Herald.
Ms. Zofeen T. Ibrahim for her article “Where angles fear to tread” published in Monthly Newsline.
Ms. Iram Ansari for her article “The day that shook the world” published in Monthly SHE.
Ms. Faiza Ilyas for her article “Trees-a lifetime” published in Dawn Review.
