PEMRA to grant licences to private broadcast media

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Elect-ronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday decided to issue provisional broadcast licenses to all qualified applicants in order to avoid unnecessary procedural delays to safeguard them from financial and time loss. While considering the procedural and ground impediments to broadcast media prospects in their smooth functioning the PEMRA in its meeting at its headquarters decided to ensure enhanced facilitation to existing and prospective entrants to this arena.

The PEMRA also decided to soon hold an open bidding for the slots of FM radio broadcast station licenses that were canceled because of their failure to establish and operate within stipulated time period. The authority during its meeting has confirmed the cancellation of the inoperative broadcast licenses after according them due chance of appeal. As the license holders failed to state any convincing reason, the Authority therefore, decided the cancellation of licenses in exercise of powers conferred in PEMRA (TV/Radio Broadcast Operations) Regulations 2002.

The authority resolved to soon hold an open and transparent bidding for the vacant slots in order to issue licensesto qualified, prudent and technically sound firms so that the expeditious reach of quality broadcast media could be ensured to these areas. The authority also approved to grant license for a first-ever full time food channel from Pakistan. This would be the first complete food channel of Asia and would be of greater assistance to public especially for household women to impart knowledge on health, and food subjects. In addition, the terms and conditions for introducing IPTV regime in Pakistan were also finalized which would be issued shortly.
