Wana journalist sues Reuters Television

PESHAWAR: Mujeebur Rehman, a journalist from South Waziristan, on Tuesday filed a case against Reuters Television for his “unwarranted” termination from the job.

Talking to Daily Times, Mujeeb said that he had been working as a cameraman for the Reuters TV since June 2004, but his services were terminated “without notice” after his differences with the regional chief of the television last year.

“I have moved the court in Islamabad to seek justice,” the journalist, who has settled in Islamabad after an attack on his life, said. The journalist also filed a case against Television News Network (TNN), owned by Sattar Habib from Karachi. The TNN provides footage to Reuters Television.

Mujeeb said he joined the Reuters Television as a cameraman and earned name after extensive coverage of the war on terror in South Waziristan for several years. During the course of his professional working in his hometown, he managed to survive an attempt on his life outside Wana while working for Reuters in May 2005.

Barrister Aleem Shahid, counsel for the petitioner, said in a press statement, “This case represents an important development in the struggle for journalists’ rights across the country.” He said that journalists risked their lives for the sake of the truth and were an invaluable asset to any democratic society, yet their plights usually remained ignored and untold.

He said, “Through this case, we hope to see a change in the way journalists are being treated by employers in the media industry, but most of all, we hope to obtain justice for our client.” “I have filed the case after thorough consultations with my lawyer in an effort to get justice. I am affected and I am optimistic to get justice,” the journalist said.
