US to continue to help improve living standards in Fata

PESHAWAR: Principal Officer at US Consulate in Peshawar, Ms Lynne Tracy, has reiterated that the United States would continue to help Pakistan to improve education, healthcare, transportation and economic opportunities in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas(FATA).

‘The US government signed a new multi-year agreement on September 30 offering $ 750 million dollar in development assistance to FATA over the next five years. The United States is providing $105 million this year for the FATA development programme, she said,
Ms Tracy said this, while to students and faculty at the Institute of Management Sciences here Monday; she said that women in FATA would benefit substantially from the assistance. This is particularly appropriate to focus on as we mark November 25 as the International day for elimination of violence against women”.

She said that better education; access to healthcare and real economic opportunities would bring about dramatic change in the welfare of women in FATA and help to end communal and domestic violence.

The US Consulate official noted that this effort would help create economic opportunities for people of FATA with employment generation programmes, including cash for work, skills development and vocational training, support for the agriculture, livestock and trade sectors and community infrastructure.

‘Ms Tracy said the goal was to offer the hope of improved healthcare facilities, better education, and a bright future for the people of the poorest areas of Pakistan. The United States is doing this because Pakistan is our partner and ally in the region and we have a long-term commitment to help Pakistan become more democratic, prosperous and peaceful.
