Three hurt as teachers attack press club

By Haleem Asad

TIMERGARA: Three local journalists received injuries when a group of protesting teachers attacked Timergara Press Cub here on Thursday.

The injured journalists include Timergara Press Club president Syed Amjad Ali Shah, Ismail Anjum and Ziaur Rahim. They told Dawn that they were sitting in the press club when more than 50 infuriated teachers affiliated with All Primary Teachers Association, Malgari Ustazan and Ittihad-i-Asataza stormed the president’s office.

“The teachers were complaining of ‘no coverage’ in print media. They alleged that media was giving coverage only to Jamaat-i-Islami affiliated teachers’ association. After some arguments they started beating us,” the journalists said.
They said earlier the teachers burnt bundles of some Peshawar-based Urdu newspapers and chanted slogans against journalists.

The journalists were again attacked by the angry teachers when they were on way to Timergara police station to lodge an FIR.

Police registered a case against leaders of the protesting teachers Badsha Mahmood, Ali Rahman, Naeem Jan and Ihsanullah.
The government employees are holding protest rallies against delay in implementation of Pay and Pension Commission’s recommendations.

However, teachers of the district are divided in several groups and each group is wishing to get more coverage in media.

On Thursday, another protest demonstration was held by All Teachers Association in front of Timergara Press Club.
They demanded implementation of the recommendations of Pay and Pension Commission.

The protesters later scattered peacefully. Just after some 15 minutes another group of teachers took out a procession, which culminated in front of the press club. But instead of protesting against the government they criticised media and attacked the press club.
