Threatened freedom

Sir: Press freedom in Pakistan is a mixed bag; it has some degree of press freedom but also serious restrictions, thus rendering it crippled in many important respects. The greatest threat these days comes from the terrorists, i.e. the local Taliban.

If a journalist dares to write or say something anti-Taliban, he/she is threatened. Many journalists have lost their lives at the hands of these maniacs who are out to spread terror while others live in constant fear.

The threat to a free press in Pakistan should be of great concern to all Pakistanis, as it threatens not just individual journalists or media groups, but civil society itself. All citizens of Pakistan must vow to fight for the freedom of the press, as it is also a fight for genuine democracy.
