Sindh govt to establish Newseum

SUKKUR: Sindh Information and Archive Department has decided to establish ‘Newseum’ like museum to preserve the record of newspapers and also preserve the record of PRCs, domiciles and other ancient record relating to the province.

Secretary Information and Archive Sindh, Dr Zulfiqar Shalwani said this at Meet the Press programme at Sukkur Press Club on Sunday. He said that around 1,850 ancient documents would be archived, while these documents would be microfilmed. A record room would be established in each district headquarter where such documents would be preserved. The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of respective districts would provide plot for building the record rooms.

He said case-to-case record of heritage, cultural, archaeological, historical and prestigious record would be preserved and displayed in libraries for researchers. He said preservation of the record of the sessions of assemblies needs rules and regulations.

Secretary said outstanding dues of newspapers of Rs400 million against advertisement had been paid without any discrimination. He said the department would also release grants for press clubs while financial assistance would be provided to journalists.

He said that social and financial assistance was also being provided to journalists. Secretary said the budget of Information Offices had enhanced as the department faces shortage of vehicles and technical equipments like computer, fax machines. This matter, he said, would be resolved before June 2014. Secretary said he would get released the funds for Sukkur Press Club and announced to provide to the Club computer, fax machine, air- conditioner and other equipment.

Meanwhile, Secretary Information parried to answer a question about utilisation funds of the province on Sindh Festival.He did not answer when asked about implementation of the wage board, saying it was a political subject. He also did not comment on appointments of information officers.

President Sukkur Press Club, Lala Asad Pathan and Secretary Syed Mumtaz Bukhari briefed him about problems of journalists and construction of the Club’s building. They also asked the secretary to establish Endowment Funds for the Welfare of Journalists and to initiate skill development projects. The secretary later visited the record room of Khairpur where he was briefed by the in charge. He also held meetings with DCs of Sukkur and Khairpur in connection with preservation and archiving ancient record.
