Shaheen Sehbai resigns
ISLAMABAD- Editor of The News, Shaheen Sehbai resigned on Friday. In his resignation, also e-mailed to journalists, he has refuted all charges of “policy violations”, which according to him were an excuse for the Editor-in-Chief to comply with the government demand to sack him and three other senior journalists working for the newspaper.
He said it was not possible for him to “get in line, or be ready for the stick.” In the resignation, addressed to the Editor-in-Chief of The News, he said he ran the newspaper as a very independent Editor, according to whatever he thought was objective, true and professionally sound journalism.
He said he had taken the right decision on the basis of principles. “I have decided to resign from the editorship of The News, with immediate effect, rather than to submit to government pressure and change the policy of the newspaper.
