Omar’s wife opposes extradition to US

KARACHI- The wife of the confessed mastermind of slain US reporter Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping has appealed to Pakistan not to extradite her husband to the United States, court officials said Saturday.

Sadia Omar Sheikh, wife of British Islamic militant Sheikh Omar, told Sindh High Court Friday that her husband was not behind Pearl’s abduction and killing and should not be extradited.

In the first place Sheikh Omar was not connected with the said crime, but even if there were some allegations against him he (has) the right to a fair trail in his country and not by a court outside Pakistan,’ the wife’s petition to the court said.

A two-judge bench of the high court did not take any decision but will hear the petition again Tuesday, public prosecutor Raja Qureshi told one of the sources.

Omar told a court February 14 that he arranged Pearl’s kidnapping and that the correspondent was dead.

The slain reporter’s employer, the Wall Street Journal, reported that Pearl’s widow Mariane Pearl appealed to French President Jacques Chirac at a Paris meeting to help Pakistan fight terrorism.

Mariane, a French journalist, is seven months pregnant with the couple’s first child. US officials have personally asked to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to extradite Omar, who is also wanted over the 1994 kidnapping of an American in India.
