Senior journalist Sharif Kamal passes away

KARACHI- Sharif Kamal Usmani, a senior journalist died on July 10th, 2003 morning after protracted illness, at the age of 66. He was buried at Paposh Nagar graveyard.

He opted for the profession of journalism in the early 1960s by joining an Urdu Daily ‘Anjam’ as an education reporter. Later, he joined another Urdu newspaper, Daily Mashriq.

On March 15, 1975 he joined the erstwhile Daily Hurriyat and remained associated with it till December 30, 1989. After Hurriyat, he started contributing occasionally to an English language daily and on April 4, 1992 Usmani formally joined the English language evening newspaper of the same publication group.

Throughout his career in journalism, he continued to report on education, so he was righteously considered as an authority and expert on the local and provincial education system. He was also a poet and short story writer in Urdu.

Usmani also remained attached with Radio Pakistan and conducted its current affairs programmes. He was also known among the journalistic, educational and social circles of the city, for his honesty, integrity and commitment to earn a modest livelihood within his means and resource. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. Last year, he along with his wife visited Canada to see his elder son, Saad Ahmed Usmani, who was settled there.
