SAMFA, SAMC condemn targeted killing of tribal journalist

LAHORE: The South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and South Asia Media Commission (SAMC), on Wednesday, condemned the outrageous targeted killing of a Pakistani journalist by a remote-controlled bomb planted in his car.

“The death of Nasrullah Afridi from the northwestern Khyber Agency who was on the hitlist of a feared terrorist leader Mangal Bagh is yet another example of the insecurity journalists in Pakistan are faced with,” said SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam and SAMC President Kumar Ketkar and Secretary General Najam Sethi in a joint statement.

“Threats to the safety of journalists, especially those working in the conflict areas are mounting. The authorities should work towards ensuring that the journalists work in a safe environment and do not become victims of anti-media attacks,” they said.

While South Asia has mourned the killing of at least 20 journalists, 12 of them from Pakistan, in 2010, Afridi’s death is the third this year in the line of duty. At least 15 journalists have died in targeted killings in Pakistan since 2002.
