Rashid pays tributes to journalists killed in Iraq war

ISLAMABAD- Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on April 9, 2003 paid tributes to the journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty during the Iraq war.

Talking to participants of a protest meeting organised by the Electronic Media Association on the killing of journalists during the Iraq war, Rashid said the protection of journalist community was duty of the warring parties, but they failed, thus causing death of numerous mediamen.

He said journalism is a holy profession and the people attached to the profession keep the masses abreast of facts of happenings without caring about their own lives.

“The journalist community is engaged in keeping the people informed about facts even during the war. Sometimes they lose their lives while performing the sacred job,” he said.

The participants presented a memorandum deploring the killing of their colleagues and demanded of the UN to set up an independent tribunal, comprising representatives from international journalists bodies, human rights groups, and other unbiased individuals to probe into the incidents.

A number of mediamen lost their lives during the war. In the latest of these deaths, three mediamen were killed, including a reporter of Al-Jazeera TV in a rocket attack on Palestine Hotel in Baghdad.
