CPNE condemns killing of newsmen in Iraq

KARACHI- Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) President Mujibur Rehman Shami and General Secretary Mahmudul Aziz in a joint statement on April 9, 2003 have strongly condemned the wanton killing of journalists in Iraq, including Baghdad by the US-led forces.

They said that despite all the excuses and explanations given by the US military high command it was obvious that these attacks on the journalists, especially in Baghdad city, were deliberate and meant to silence honest and truthful reporting of the events in Iraq where a war has been thrust on the Iraqi nation without any recourse to the United Nations and in total violation of all the norms of international law.

The CPNE office-bearers pointed out that the safety of the journalists covering any war was the responsibility of the powers that undertake such actions, and in this particular case, of the US.

The CPNE office-bearers declared that the editors community of Pakistan joined their brothers and sisters in Iraq and world-wide in condemning this deliberate US action and urge upon the member nations of the United Nations to take notice of this wanton act of killing by the US military forces and condemn it in the strongest terms.

They also urged upon all the NGOs in Pakistan to strongly voice their protest against this attack on free media by the US forces.
