Protest against killing of journalist

KARACHI: Journalist bodies on Thursday afternoon staged a protest demonstration in front of the Karachi Press Club against the killing of Mukarram Khan Atif, a Peshawar-based journalist of a private TV channel, and the sacking of nearly a dozen journalists of a local daily.

Life insecurity among journalists had increased with every passing day amid the ongoing tug of war between the ruling parties and other political groups, said KUJ President Mohammad Arif Khan while speaking at the protest demonstration, which was jointly organised by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).

He warned the relevant authorities that the journalists’ community would be forced to initiate a protest movement if the killers of Mr Atif were not apprehended.

He also condemned the sacking of 10 journalists of the local Urdu daily. He demanded that the economic crackdown on journalists be stopped forthwith.

Other representatives of the unions said that if the sacked journalists were not reinstated they would protest in front of the office of the daily.

Addressing the protesting journalists, senior labour leader Habibuddin Junaidi said that the killing of Mr Atif was a big setback for the journalist community.
