Probe panel seeks email, phone record of Shahzad

LAHORE: The judicial commission investigating the murder of journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad has directed the Ministry of Interior and Federal Investigation Agency to furnish complete record of email accounts and cellular phones used by the deceased.

At its second meeting held at the Supreme Court registry here on Wednesday, the commission decided to invite 16 prominent people, mostly senior journalists, to share information about the murder.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar of the Supreme Court presided over the meeting attended by members of the commission, Chief Justice of Federal Shariat Court Agha Rafique, Islamabad IGP Binyamin, Punjab IGP Javed Iqbal and President of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Pervez Shaukat.

Federal Information Secretary Taimoor Azmat Usman, who is secretary of the commission, also attended the meeting.
Mr Usman later told reporters that the commission had decided to summon the complainant during its next proceedings to be held on July 9 in Islamabad.

He said the commission had invited relatives and friends of Saleem Shahzad and public at large through newspaper advertisements to share with it information about the murder, but the response was disappointing.

The information secretary said the commission had invited senior journalists Zahid Hussain, Najam Sethi, Hamid Mir, Naseem Zahra, Zafar Sheikh, Imtiaz Alam, Umar Cheema, Talat Hussain, C.R. Shamsi,

Matiullah Jan, Absar Alam, Zahir Shah and Irtaza Sheikh and Ali Dayan Hassan of Human Rights Watch to record their statements.
